Soapmaking Workshops must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance. Students must bring with them a completed Registration Form with payment, and choose a fragrance for their soaps PRIOR TO THE DAY OF THE WORKSHOP.
Have you ever been interested in learning how fabric is made, or the yarn that is used for weaving fabric or knitting? Or maybe you've always wanted to know how to make soap.
Well, if you've ever been interested in learning just how these tasks are accomplished, starting January 2008, I am offering workshops, by appointment, for the beginner.
To tell you a little about myself, my name is S. Jane Deerfield and I have almost 25 years of handweaving and handspinning experience and 40 years of knitting experience. I started making my own homemade and handmade soap ten years ago and not long after, added my own handpoured soy candles, balms/oils, and botanicals/potpourri.
Please contact me if you are interested in taking any of the following workshops. Workshops will be held at my residence by appointment at a mutually convenient time. Childcare is not available. Please do not bring children unless they are taking a workshop which has been paid for. Smoking will NOT be allowed on the premises.

ONE-DAY HANDSPINNING WORKSHOP USING A SPINNING WHEEL (up to 5 hours): Learn how to handspin yarn from fiber that I have prepared for you. We will start with simple, basic instruction on how a spinning wheel works, how to use a spinning wheel, and spinning your first yarn. $125.00 non-refundable and non-transferable fee per person for the day. Payment in full is due prior to the first workshop.
ONE-DAY WEAVE-YOUR-OWN SCARF WORKSHOP (up to 8 hrs): Basic information on weaving is provided. You will be given written and verbal instruction to weave your 5 ft. scarf from available yarns. I will warp the loom beforehand. After weaving your first scarf, you can decide if you would like to continue with more in-depth lessons. $150.00 non-refundable and non-transferable fee per person for the day. Payment in full is due prior to the workshop.
DAY 1: You will be provided with written and verbal instruction to warp (prepare) the loom for weaving using the sectional method. This will include winding the yarn onto bobbins, warping the loom, threading the heddles, sleying the reed, treadle tie-up.
DAY 2: The second day of the workshop will be spent first weaving a sample using stick and boat shuttles until you are comfortable. After sampling, the rest of the day will be spent weaving your own 5 foot long scarf from a choice of yarns I have available.
1/2-DAY KNITTING WORKSHOP: By the end of the workshop, you will have enough information to knit your first project, a hand knitted scarf. Yarn, knitting needles and instruction will be provided. $75 non-refundable and non-transferable fee per person for the day. Payment in full is due prior to the workshop.
1/2 DAY SOAP MAKING WORKSHOP: Learn how to make your own soap from scratch using the "Cold Process" method, cure times, what oils can be used in soap making and how specific oils can help certain skin conditions. We will also discuss lye which is necessary to make soap, saponification (the chemical reaction that takes place when oil, water and lye combine to form soap and glycerin), safety when using lye, equipment and utensils.
During this workshop, you will make three one pound batches of soap: (1) one with fragrance (and how much to add); (2) one without fragrance, but with an oatmeal exfoliant; and (3) one with fragrance and exfoliant. After your soaps have been made, you will leave with all three batches which when cut, will yield twelve 4 oz. bars. With the cold process (CP) method, soaps require an 8-week cure time and should not be used prior to fully curing. Students need to bring the following:
One(1) large stainless steel bowl for mixing ingredients
Three (3) containers (molds) that will hold at least one lb. (16 oz.) of
soap (plastic, wood, glass, box).
One (1) handmixer (preferably electric with stainless steel blades)
One (1) long handle plastic spoon
One (1) pair of intact rubber gloves (no holes, preferably a new pair)

One (1) plastic apron (plastic trash bag with holes cut out for neck and
arms will do)
One (1) pair of protective eyewear (glasses or goggles)
One (1) old blanket or large towel to cover molds and retain heat during
saponification
PLEASE HAVE THE ABOVE ITEMS AS THEY WILL NOT BE PROVIDED FOR YOU.
Ingredients consisting of oils, exfoliants, fragrance, lye and water will be provided by me.
